Storm Desmond causes flood devastation in Cumbria

You've probably already seen the sad headlines regarding the damage that floods have been causing to homes over the past few days - Storm Desmond has left thousands homeless and has claimed the lives of three people in the North of the UK and Scotland. Furthermore, 45,000 properties are without power as the region faced record levels of rising water levels that caused unforeseen damage. Areas in Cumbria that were effected includes, Kendal, Cockermouth, Carlisle, Keswick and Appleby - 999 calls understandably doubled during the worst of the floods as people called for assistance for what's being called by some as 'the worst floods in nearly 50 years'.

Some blame has been placed upon the government after it was revealed that there were 300 planned flood defence schemes scrapped after being deemed 'low priority'. Although defences has been put in place in 2009 in Keswick for instance, their 15 ft height was not enough to stop the water rising when it reached 17ft. The army was even deployed in order to help those who were in trapped areas.

Jeremy Corybyn released a statement on Facebook in which he promised to look into what went wrong with regards to the resources that could have been put in place.

Two-foot floods hit the UK

Last week the UK suffered from two foot floods as a result of heavy rainfall - this story was covered by several different newspapers as they reported that the heavy rainfall was caused by the superstorm jet stream from Hurricane Joaquin in the Bahamas. Many highways were seriously hit, causing travel chaos on the motorways as many lanes were completely flooded:

The weather even caused the Bradford football team to cancel their football match last week due to unplayable conditions. Many homes were damaged and even more were threatened by rainfall that was expected for the days following.

Many people are neglecting the installation of Flood Defence systems within their home; however for those in the know - these systems bring with it many more benefits than one might expects. Obviously you're protecting your precious possessions from the dangers the come with rising water levels but devices such as flood proof doors, waterproof wall coatings, air bricks, automatic garage doors and control systems will help to reduce the amount that you pay on your home insurance. Their team have several years of experience surveying and fitting a wide range of products (some exclusive) across the United Kingdom to help homeowners and businesses to protect themselves against flooding.
