Storm Desmond causes flood devastation in Cumbria

You've probably already seen the sad headlines regarding the damage that floods have been causing to homes over the past few days - Storm Desmond has left thousands homeless and has claimed the lives of three people in the North of the UK and Scotland. Furthermore, 45,000 properties are without power as the region faced record levels of rising water levels that caused unforeseen damage. Areas in Cumbria that were effected includes, Kendal, Cockermouth, Carlisle, Keswick and Appleby - 999 calls understandably doubled during the worst of the floods as people called for assistance for what's being called by some as 'the worst floods in nearly 50 years'.

Some blame has been placed upon the government after it was revealed that there were 300 planned flood defence schemes scrapped after being deemed 'low priority'. Although defences has been put in place in 2009 in Keswick for instance, their 15 ft height was not enough to stop the water rising when it reached 17ft. The army was even deployed in order to help those who were in trapped areas.

Jeremy Corybyn released a statement on Facebook in which he promised to look into what went wrong with regards to the resources that could have been put in place.

What If? | Flood Guard

What if I'd have protected my home? What if we didn't have to spend weeks or even months repairing the damages left behind? What if the flood never happened? These are just a few of the questions left behind after a flood has affected your home. Floods not only damage your home, business or vehicle, it can leave emotional damage behind too. Two-foot floods hit the UK

Last week the UK suffered from two foot floods as a result of heavy rainfall - this story was covered by several different newspapers as they reported that the heavy rainfall was caused by the superstorm jet stream from Hurricane Joaquin in the Bahamas. Many highways were seriously hit, causing travel chaos on the motorways as many lanes were completely flooded:

The weather even caused the Bradford football team to cancel their football match last week due to unplayable conditions. Many homes were damaged and even more were threatened by rainfall that was expected for the days following.

Many people are neglecting the installation of Flood Defence systems within their home; however for those in the know - these systems bring with it many more benefits than one might expects. Obviously you're protecting your precious possessions from the dangers the come with rising water levels but devices such as flood proof doors, waterproof wall coatings, air bricks, automatic garage doors and control systems will help to reduce the amount that you pay on your home insurance. Their team have several years of experience surveying and fitting a wide range of products (some exclusive) across the United Kingdom to help homeowners and businesses to protect themselves against flooding.

Protecting Your Vehicles From Flood Damage | Flood Guard

Unfortunately, something that your car insurance does not cover is Flood Damage. RACQ advise that if your vehicle has been affected by floods (water reaching the height of the bottom of the doors) that you do not drive until you have had a full service to assure your safety.

However, something you can do, is protect your car from ever being damaged by flooding. Here at Flood Guard, we offer an Automatic Door Sealing System on your garage, specifically designed to protect your home or vehicle from the damage caused by floods.

Protect your vehicle against flood water at up to 1 metre in height for prolonged periods of time. Your garage is a really important part of your home to protect. Although this may not apply to everyone, many people keep many expensive pieces of equipment in the garage such as lawn mowers, bikes and power tools. The cost to replace all of these items after flood damage would be extremely excessive, that's before even taking any cars, motorbikes etc. into consideration.

People who are affected by floods pay on average at least £8,000 to fix all the damage left behind. This price is usually put together before the cost of replacing any damaged goods if you don't have home insurance. However, not even all home insurance policies cover many of the damages caused by floods.

Make sure your home is protected. If you feel your home may be at risk of flooding, contact us today, or visit http://www.floodguarduk.co.uk/

Study concludes that climate change will boost flash floods....

The threat of global warming can potentially cause the risk of flash flooding to increase five times according the Met Office - bringing incredibly severe floods to the United Kingdom throughout the summer months.  The study concluded that, although dryer overall, the summer months have the potential to bring with them more intense downfalls - this is an issue because once too much rain falls within a short period of time the risk of flash floods increases significantly.
